Beekman 1802, a goat milk-based skin care company, is leveraging augmented reality and artificial intelligence technology to empower its web traffic and sales. The retailer recently launched its My Skin Biome tool, a mobile web app that assesses skin attributes and then offers a custom skin care routine based on skin’s redness, wrinkles, dark spots, hydration, texture and skin microbiome scores.

According to David Baker, chief digital officer at Beekman 1802, the app has led to a double-digit boost in cart size and a 35% higher conversion rate among users. Moreover, app users dwelled 50% longer on the Beekman 1802 site and the average order volume for consumers who use the app is 13% larger than those who don’t.

The My Skin Biome tool was developed in partnership with Perfect Corp., a company that creates augmented reality and artificial intelligence technology. Wayne Liu, chief growth officer at Perfect Corp., said that “skin care is less AR; it’s more AI because it’s machine learning.”

“It’s a diagnostics tool. Basically, we have the user scan their face, and then we’ll identify the ‘concern,’ which is the skin care problem from their photo. That’s a machine learning process,” Liu said.

The My Skin Biome tool works directly from the website on a user’s mobile phone. Consumers can access the tool through Beekman1802.com and submit a selfie taken in the app using the mobile phone’s camera. It then generates products tailored toward the user’s needs and skin care goals, offering users the ability to add products to their carts. Beekman 1802 also provides a QR code on its desktop website that shoppers can scan to access the My Skin Biome tool on their phones.

The tool is part of Beekman 1802’s mission to become the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of beauty brands.
