Home and garden retailer Robert Dyas has achieved a 20% reduction in energy costs and 285 tonnes of CO2 emissions in just three months, thanks to a successful energy management project. The savings equate to £600,000.
Robert Dyas partnered with proptech firm Facilio to deploy their connected buildings platform across the retailer's 93 stores and distribution centre.
Charlotte Walker, Robert Dyas’ CFO, said: “It took a combination of using the right technology and a cultural shift to get here. The change centred around instilling a cost-conscious culture and encouraging responsible spending.”
Smart meters were installed during off-peak hours to avoid disrupting operations. Facilio’s platform enabled Robert Dyas to gain visibility over their entire portfolio of stores, along with access to real-time insights and analysis into consumption. This helped them visualise better and identify the exact causes for a spike in energy consumption.
Prabhu Ramachandran, CEO of Facilio, said: “The energy crisis of 2022 prompted many companies in the retail sector to reassess their approaches to energy consumption. Robert Dyas was one of the few who had the foresight to proactively address energy optimisation on a larger scale through their cultural transformation and technology-driven strategy.”
The RetailX Sustainability 2023 report looks at how retailers have sustainability embedded across their organisation and departments working together to manage ESG change. The 36-page report will be released soon and can be pre-registered for now.
The successful energy management project at Robert Dyas is an example of how retailers can reduce energy costs and emissions through the use of technology and a cultural shift. According to Walker, “The savings achieved in just three months are a testament to the power of technology and the importance of creating a cost-conscious culture.”
