In 2022, Italy's ecommerce market witnessed a growth of 18.6 percent, reaching a total turnover of €75.89 billion, according to the Ecommerce in Italy 2023 report by Casaleggio Associati, a prominent digital strategy consulting firm in the country. Comparatively, in 2021, the market experienced a 33 percent growth and a turnover of €64 billion. The data suggests a deceleration in the expansion of online sales in Italy.

Davide Casaleggio, the president of Casaleggio Associati, explained that 2022 marked a return to normal market rules for exhibitors and producers, devoid of the influence of the pandemic lockdowns. A significant factor impacting the Italian ecommerce landscape was the unprecedented inflation, which led to higher prices, uncertainty due to the energy crisis, ongoing war, and increasing transportation costs from Asia.

The Leisure sector dominated online sales, accounting for 50 percent of the total turnover (€38 billion), attributed to the rise of online gaming and purchases related to hobbies and sports. Online shopping centers followed in second place, generating 19 percent of the total revenue (€14.2 billion).

The Tourism sector experienced the most substantial growth in 2022, at 47 percent, primarily driven by price increases and contributing to 13.3 percent of the total ecommerce turnover. Although overall sales volume decreased in most sectors, higher prices still led to an increase in turnover. This trend was particularly evident in sectors such as Food, Home and Furniture, Consumer Electronics, and Online Shopping Centers.

Italian ecommerce businesses primarily generated their turnover through their own websites (40 percent), followed by marketplaces accounting for 28 percent. Mobile apps are gaining importance for larger sellers, representing an average of 8 percent of turnover.

The Ecommerce in Italy 2023 report anticipates a 17.3 percent growth in ecommerce turnover in the country for 2023. Leisure Time, Food and Fashion, and Health and Beauty sectors are expected to witness the most significant increases in online turnover, at 23, 20, and 19 percent, respectively.
