Amazon Workers in Coventry Announce Six New Strike Dates

Amazon workers in Coventry have announced six new strike dates in protest of the company's working conditions and pay. The strikes will take place over the next two months and will involve workers from the company's fulfillment center in Coventry.

The workers, who are members of the GMB union, have been in negotiations with Amazon for several months over pay and working conditions. The union claims that workers at the Coventry fulfillment center are paid less than the national living wage and are subjected to harsh working conditions, including long hours and inadequate breaks.

The new strike dates are set to take place on April 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, and May 3rd and 10th. The strikes will involve workers from all shifts and will last for 24 hours each.

In a statement, GMB regional secretary, Joe Morgan, said: "Amazon workers in Coventry have had enough of being treated like second-class citizens. They work hard to make Amazon the successful company it is, but they are paid less than the national living wage and are subjected to harsh working conditions. These strikes are a last resort, but the workers feel they have no other choice."

Amazon has responded to the announcement of the strikes by saying that it is committed to providing a safe and positive working environment for all of its employees. The company has also said that it pays its workers a competitive wage and offers a range of benefits, including health insurance and a 401(k) plan.

However, the GMB union has disputed Amazon's claims, saying that the company's working conditions are "inhumane" and that its workers are "treated like robots."

This is not the first time that Amazon workers in the UK have gone on strike. In 2021, workers at the company's fulfillment center in Rugeley went on strike over pay and working conditions. The strikes lasted for several weeks and resulted in the company agreeing to a pay increase for its workers.

The announcement of the new strikes in Coventry comes at a time when Amazon is facing increasing scrutiny over its treatment of workers. In the US, workers at an Amazon warehouse in Alabama are currently voting on whether to form a union, which would be the first union at an Amazon facility in the country.

The GMB union has called on Amazon to engage in meaningful negotiations with its workers in Coventry in order to resolve the dispute. However, if the company fails to do so, the strikes are set to go ahead as planned.
