Bare Kind, an eco-friendly footwear company, has reported success in sales for the past year, with 60% of their sales coming in November and December. The company, which was founded by former HSBC employee, Jeffrey, and her partner Andy Kemp, sells socks themed around animals, with the current best seller being the puffin socks which support the Scottish Seabird Centre.

The company has seen a surge in sales due to the cliche of buying socks as a present for Christmas, with 55% of sales being in men’s larger sizes and most of the purchasers being women, buying up to 20 pairs as gifts. Father’s Day is another big seller, as well as animal themed days throughout the year such as National Otter Day in May.

The company’s retailers are largely independents and charity shops on behalf of the animals they are supporting, but Jeffrey is now looking to work with some of the big retailers such as John Lewis.

Jeffrey has commented on the challenges of managing Bare Kind’s inventory, saying that it is a ‘massive challenge’. She has used stock control software to keep a close eye on stock and make sure they don’t over order on less popular lines, as well as renegotiating their minimum order with their supplier and taking on a merchandiser to improve their buying.

The company has also launched a new mystery box with eight lines which has best sellers but is also good for surplus stock. Jeffrey has also commented on the success of Shopify as an e-commerce platform, as well as Clavio for email marketing.

Next stop for Bare Kind could be socks themed around reptiles and even creepy crawlies, with Jeffrey stating that “they have their own corner of the market. There are definitely people out there who will want them.”

The donations from the turtle socks alone were able to build a turtle hatchery, giving thousands of baby turtles a safe place to start their lives.
