Amazon has achieved a major milestone in its sustainability efforts, delivering over 150 million packages using Rivian's electric vehicles. The e-commerce giant has rolled out 5,000 electric delivery vehicles across more than 800 U.S. cities since it began using Rivian EVs last summer.
The company announced the news in a blog post last week, noting that cities where Amazon's custom electric vans are being used to make deliveries include Baltimore, Houston, Las Vegas, New York, Seattle and Miami.
The move is part of Amazon's larger sustainability goals, which include decarbonizing its transportation fleet. To that end, the company placed an order for 100,000 custom electric vehicles from Rivian in 2019.
"Since 2015, we have invested in materials, processes, and technologies that have reduced per-shipment packaging weight by 38% and eliminated over 1.5 million tons of packaging material," Amazon said in the blog post.
The company also plans to invest more than 1 billion euros over the next five years to boost its decarbonization efforts across Europe.
